文化与科学的关系　　一、科学的概念　　科学一词，英文为science，源于拉丁文的scio，后来又演变为scientin，最后成了今天的写法，其本意是“知识”、“学问”。日本著名科学启蒙大师福泽瑜吉把“science”译为“科学”。到了1893年，康有为引进并使用“科学”二字。严复在翻译《天演论》等科学著作时，也用“科学”二字。此后，“科学”二字便在中国广泛运用。　　科学是运用范畴、定理、定律等思维形式反映现实世界各种现象的本质和规律的知识体系，是社会意识形态之一。　　按研究对象的不同可分为自然科学、社会科学和思维科学，以及总结和贯穿于三个领域的哲学和数学。　　按与实践的不同联系可分为理论科学、技术科学、应用科学等。　　科学来源于社会实践，服务于社会实践。它是一种在历史上起推动作用的革命力量。在现代，科学技术是第一生产力。科学的发展和作用受社会条件的制约。现代科学正沿着学科高度分化和高度综合的方向蓬勃发展。　　二、文化与科学的关系　　英国学者查尔斯·帕希·斯诺（CPSnow，1905-1980）1959年在剑桥大学的讲演中指出现代社会存在着相互对立的两种文化，一种是人文文化，一种是科学文化。一方是文学知识分子，一方是科学家，并以物理学家最有代表性。斯诺认为，科学是一种文化，属于这种文化的科学家们彼此之间尽管也有许多互不理解之处，但是总的来说，他们具有共同的价值标准和行为准则。科学作为一种文化，其约束力甚至比宗教、政治和阶级的模式更强。　　科学以其清醒的理智、严密的逻辑、真实的观念构筑了文化，因此我们有理由可以首先声明：文化远非是科学的，文化曾经在很长的一段时间内窒息着科学，有一个时期，科学又几乎把文化淹没。　　科学是人类文化最高的成就和最后的成就，也是文化系统中最值得信赖的部分。在人类历史的绝大部分时间，人类文化的诸多样式，诸如语言、宗教、艺术、道德、国家和政府等普遍建立起来以后，科学还被巫术、迷信和宗教窒息着。从16世纪开始，科学才真正走上历史的舞台，大放光彩，科学大有淹没文化之势。　　实际上，科学更多的属于文明，较少地属于文化，它是有一套技术体系支持的。而社会的存在、运行、变迁却更多地按着文化价值原则，而不是根据科学的技术要求进行。社会总体上说是非科学的，它既有科学可以把握的理智、逻辑、秩序，也有变化莫测的非理性、潜意识、情绪和混乱。如果说社会科学的目的仅仅是引用科学的方法探究社会，那还有它的可能性。如果目的在于用“科学”制作、规范社会与文化，那只能是科学的盲目自信。宗教、语言、艺术、伦理道德、风俗习惯等文化样式几乎与科学风马牛不相及。　　三、反思　　现代社会，人们发现科学不是万能的，任何科学技术的出现既可以给人类带来幸福，也可以给人类带来灾难。这使人在思考，科学技术能确保人类的幸福吗？为什么有人享受着物质文明却并不感到幸福？为什么物质财富如此丰富的今天还没有消除贫困和不公正？人是不是会成为技术的奴隶？技术是否终将失控？　　爱因斯坦就说过：“我们的问题不能由科学来解决，而只能由人自己来解决。”确实，研究科学技术本身以及科学技术对社会的影响，需要考虑人文、社会因素。科学技术已成了一种包括大量人员、巨额资金、昂贵设备和复杂组织在内的大科学、大技术，成为对社会发展有重大影响的重大产业。科技已不是单纯的知识体系和技能体系，而成为一种社会活动和社会事业。因而出现了科学社会学、技术社会学等学科，以及专门研究科学技术与社会之间的各种关系的科学技术和社会（STS）。这是20世纪60年代末70年代初延生的一个新的研究领域，它以科学、技术、社会之间的关系为研究对象，不仅从历史、经济、哲学、文化与社会学等角度研究科学技术，而且从科学技术的角度研究社会的科学技术化。目前STS的研究和教育在我国和世界许多国家已建制化。这将促进科学文化和人文文化的沟通和融合。
